How Gold Coins Are Valued
Gold coins have two potential sources of value: gold content (melt value) and collector appeal (numismatic value). We assess every gold coin for both.
Melt value is straightforward. A 1 oz American Gold Eagle contains one troy ounce of gold. Multiply by the current spot price and you have the melt value. Fractional coins contain proportionally less gold but often trade at slightly higher premiums per ounce because of their smaller size.
Numismatic value depends on the coin's date, mint mark, condition, and rarity. A common-date $20 Saint-Gaudens in average circulated condition might sell for a modest premium above melt. A key-date example in uncirculated condition could be worth many times its gold content. We check every coin against current market data, recent auction results, and grading references. Coins certified by PCGS or NGC often bring higher premiums.
Selling Pre-1933 U.S. Gold Coins
Pre-1933 U.S. gold coins rank among the most collected and traded coins in American numismatics. The U.S. Mint struck gold coins from 1795 until 1933, when Executive Order 6102 required citizens to surrender most gold coins. Surviving examples carry historical significance and are often valuable.
The most common pre-1933 gold coins we see from Fort Worth sellers are $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles (1907-1933) and $20 Liberty Double Eagles (1850-1907). Both contain just under one troy ounce of gold (.9675 oz). Common dates in circulated condition trade at a modest premium above melt, but certain dates and mint marks can be worth thousands more.
$10 Eagles, $5 Half Eagles, and $2.50 Quarter Eagles follow a similar pattern. Common dates trade near melt plus a small premium, while scarce dates and better conditions command higher prices. We evaluate every coin individually rather than making a blanket offer based on weight alone.
